UX affects patients, too.
OVERVIEW
In all of my years in healthcare, I gained great interest in the correlation that existed between the quality of healthcare UX and the quality of patient care. In this personal project, I sought to redesign the eClinical Works interface in a way that could possibly improve user experience and, further, patient experiences.
eClinical Works
eClinical works is an electronic health record system based in Massachusetts.
My personal experience with eClinical Works: As a pediatric medical assistant (MA), I worked in a clinic that utilized this EHR system. I noticed from my first day using this application that there were many gaping spaces for improvement. Refined UX design and improved information architecture would have allowed me to spend more time with my patients, most of whom are children with parents who would have greatly appreciated extra attention.
Areas of improvement:
CTA buttons closely resembled any other text, creating a bland interface
Patient information is repeated on multiple places on screen, contributing to cluttered interface (not shown in screenshot)
Icons did not have labels, which can often cause confusion and difficulty to remember the function of each button.
Dull typography
Aspects that we wanted to maintain in final design:
Color theme
Basic layout of information for the sake of consistency
Redesigning eCW Logo
Redesigning the Log In page
Dynamic logo pictured at the top of the page
Improved use of color theme
Utilization of illustration to create a ‘clinical feel’
